Custom Manufacturing

Custom Manufacturing for OEMs

General Linear Systems provides custom manufacturing for OEMs that need magnetic components built around specific prints, electrical requirements, or applications. We work with customers that need more than a standard, off-the-shelf component and want a manufacturing partner that can help move the project toward production. With decades of winding and assembly experience, General Linear brings proven magnetic component manufacturing expertise to each project. Our process can support new product programs as well as long-term recurring production.

Custom Manufacturing

Custom Magnetic Component Manufacturing

Not every magnetic component fits an existing size or configuration. General Linear manufactures specialty coils, solenoids, inductors, transformers, and other magnetic components based on customer requirements.

Projects typically begin with prints and specifications, so our team can review the component, evaluate material requirements, and determine the right path forward. For new programs, rapid prototyping lets customers move from design to a physical component before starting larger production runs.

Our manufacturing capabilities include winding and assembly. We produce solenoid and bobbin coils, toroidal coils, inductors, transformers, current-sensing components, and air coils.

Applications for Custom Manufacturing

Custom manufacturing is useful when the magnetic component has to fit a particular electrical, mechanical, or production requirement. A customer may need a coil designed for a specific space, a transformer with particular electrical characteristics, or a solenoid that becomes part of a larger electromechanical assembly.

General Linear supports customers from initial print review through production. This allows engineering and procurement teams to establish a manufacturing process for the component and continue working with the same supplier as the program develops.

Industries That Use Custom Magnetic Components

  • Aerospace: Specialty magnetic components can support aircraft electrical systems, sensing, actuation, and controls. The Federal Aviation Administration provides guidance covering electrical appliances, motors, and transformers used in transport-category airplanes.
  • Medical: Coils, solenoids, and transformers can support valves, controls, sensing equipment, and power functions within medical devices and equipment.
  • Military: Magnetic components can be manufactured for power, communication, control, sensing, and electromechanical applications used in defense equipment.
  • Infrastructure: Coils and magnetic components can support traffic controls, vehicle detection, monitoring equipment, and other infrastructure systems.
  • Automotive: Solenoids, coils, inductors, and transformers can support vehicle controls, sensing, power management, and electromechanical functions.
  • Energy: Transformers, inductors, and current-sensing components can support power conversion, monitoring, and control. The U.S. Department of Energy describes distribution transformers as building blocks of the electric grid.
  • Security: Coils and solenoids can be incorporated into electronic locks, access controls, alarms, and other security equipment.
  • Aviation: Specialty magnetics can support electrical power, communication, actuation, sensing, and control equipment used in commercial aircraft.
  • Industrial: Industrial equipment can use magnetic components for automation, switching, motion control, sensing, and electrical power management.
  • PC/Mobile Technology: Compact magnetic components can be used for filtering, voltage conversion, current sensing, and power management in electronic devices.
