Contract Manufacturing

Manufacturing Services

General Linear Systems provides contract manufacturing services for OEMs that need a reliable source for magnetic components and assemblies. We work with customer drawings, specifications, and production requirements to help move components from initial review through prototyping and repeat manufacturing. With more than 50 years of magnetic component manufacturing experience, our team understands the importance of building a process that works from one production run to the next. Most of our work supports ongoing contract manufacturing programs rather than one-time projects.

Contract Manufacturing From Print to Production

A good contract manufacturing relationship starts well before the first full production order. General Linear typically begins by reviewing the customer’s prints, material requirements, and performance specifications. From there, we can develop prototypes, work through production considerations, and prepare the component or assembly for recurring manufacturing.

Our manufacturing work includes specialty winding services, magnetic component assembly, and production of components such as solenoid and bobbin coils, toroidal coils, transformers, inductors, current sensors, and air coils. New programs can also benefit from rapid prototyping, which typically takes about three to four weeks.

Where Contract Manufacturing Fits

Contract manufacturing makes sense when an OEM needs to produce a component or assembly consistently without bringing every manufacturing step in-house. That could mean supplying a wound component built to an established print or handling additional assembly before the part moves into the customer’s finished product.

Keeping more of the process with one manufacturing partner can also make communication easier when a print changes, production needs increase, or a component moves from prototype quantities into regular orders. General Linear’s magnetic component capabilities allow us to support both engineering teams developing a program and purchasing teams responsible for keeping that program supplied.

Industries That Use Contract Manufacturing

  • Aerospace: Coils, transformers, inductors and assemblies can support aircraft power, sensing, control and electromechanical systems.
  • Medical: Magnetic components can be incorporated into valves, sensing equipment, power systems and other medical equipment that relies on controlled electrical or mechanical functions.
  • Military: Contract manufacturing can support recurring production of magnetic components used in communications, controls, sensing systems, power supplies and other defense equipment.
  • Infrastructure: Coils and related components are used in traffic controls, vehicle detection, and other infrastructure electronics. The Federal Highway Administration discusses inductive-loop technology used for vehicle detection.
  • Automotive: Solenoids and other wound components can support valves, transmissions, locking systems, HVAC controls, sensing, and other vehicle functions.
  • Energy: Transformers, inductors and current-sensing components support power conversion, monitoring and distribution. The U.S. Department of Energy provides additional information about the role transformers play in electrical distribution.
  • Security: Magnetic components can be used in access controls, locks, alarms, detection systems and other electronic security equipment.
  • Aviation: Wound components and assemblies can support power, communication, sensing, actuation and control equipment used in commercial aviation.
  • Industrial: Industrial machinery and automation systems use coils, solenoids, transformers and inductors for motion control, switching, sensing and power management.
  • PC/Mobile Technology: Compact inductors, transformers and coils can support voltage conversion, filtering, power management and other electronic functions.

FAQs

What does General Linear manufacture?

We manufacture magnetic components including solenoid and bobbin coils, transformers, inductors, toroidal products, current-sensing components and air coils, along with related assemblies.

Can you manufacture from our existing print?

Yes. Existing prints and specifications are commonly the starting point for a contract manufacturing project.

Do you offer prototyping before production?

Yes. We support rapid prototyping for new programs, typically with a turnaround of approximately three to four weeks.

Can General Linear handle recurring production?

Yes. Recurring production represents the majority of our business. We work with OEMs that need a manufacturing partner capable of supporting ongoing orders, not just prototype quantities.

Can General Linear handle recurring assembly production?

Yes. General Linear supports ongoing assembly production for customers who need a reliable manufacturing partner for repeat orders. Our team can help maintain consistent quality and production from one run to the next.
